College men's hoops

I missed both Washington versus North Carolina and Michigan versus Duke yesterday driving back from Toronto. Both were, it sounds like, great games. And both came up just barely on the wrong side. And both suggest better things to come next year.

Huskies men's basketball wins Pac-10 tournament ...

... on a last second shot by Isaiah Thomas.

If they can string together a bunch of their good days, they will go far into the tournament, but this is a team with a variance.

Husky Men's Basketball to the Sweet 16

Well how about that! I just watched Washington more or less wipe the floor with favored New Mexico to advance to the Sweet 16 round of the NCAA Men's basletball tournament.

Very nice indeed. Now back to reading ECON 490 papers.

Addendum: Seattle Times coverage.

Washington 67 WSU 60

Washington wins the PAC-10 championship outright for the first time since 1953!

1953 was shortly after my father graduated from Washington. The Huskies last shared championship was my last year as an undergrad at Washington.

Washington 75 Stanford 68

I could get use to this "winning" business and hope that Washington's football team will give it a try in the fall. Seattle times coverage here; this is the first win for Washington men's b-ball at Stanford since 1993.

Washington 84, Arizona State 71

I almost had to pinch myself at the end: I watched the Huskies win a game.

I was not organized enough to watch a Huskies b-ball game until yesterday, but they are doing well this season and so I made the effort yesterday and was rewarded with a surprisingly strong win over a very good team.
