I'm guessing this is a case where gender (and probably age) make a significant difference. As Quartz writes it, "Another study found that students had more respect for a fictitious professor if he wore a t-shirt and had a beard." The underlying study only used only a male professor.
Well, this explains Larry Summers. (I'm thinking about the time spoke for 30 minutes to a room full of EC 10 TAs without noticing that his fly was down... way down.)
